9 to 10 September
9 September
We were up bright and early for our 8:30am train from Gare de Lyon to Marseille. Just about 3 and a half hours later we arrived in Marseille follow by a quick metro ride to reach our hotel.
We checked into our hotel right next to the Stade Velodrome then took the metro back into downtown and walked around. The weather wasn’t ideal but we made the most of it.
We had excellent lunch at Le Caveau du Théâtre. It was on a small square and we just happened to stumble upon it. We had the seafood special, that was written on a chalkboard outside and boy was it was a seafood fantasy!

After lunch we walked around town more and made our way down to the port area and The Museum of Mediterranean Civilizations. We found out the PwC actually sponsored part of the museum! We spent a few hours in the museum learning and avoiding the rain.

After the museum, we walked past Marseille sign and to Cathedrale La Major. Just stunning.

We then headed back to hotel to get ready for dinner.
Thanks to a great recommendation from the hotel we decided to have dinner at Bistrot L’Horloge. The food was out of this world. The restaurant was 2 levels, but the upper level was like a loft that looked down over the main bar area. We sat at a bar that overlooked the lower level (and made for great people watching). I would go back here in a heart beat.

After breakfast we decided to walk up to Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. It was SO windy that it could move people if they weren’t paying attention! We ended up being there for Sunday mass, which was just perfect.

After the long walk up, we decided to take the bus back down to the port to find lunch.
But before lunch we walked through the market to find some local soaps and spices.
We had lunch at Le Petit Cabanon which was just ok. I mean we had such an amazing food day yesterday, it was going to be hard to top.
We walked around more before taking metro back to hotel. With the weather being so questionable, we decided to just take it slow this afternoon.
We had dinner at hotel before Jer had to leave for his train back to Paris. On Jer’s way home a train in front hit an animal and he ended up not back until 2am. No fun.
We will be back Marseille, especially to go to the Parc national des Calanques.
